SIM Card in Frankfurt: The Honest Expat Guide (2026)
Getting a SIM card in Frankfurt is the first errand most new arrivals run, because a German mobile number unlocks everything else: bank verification codes, parcel notifications and the two factor prompt on nearly every portal you will be asked to use. Prepaid here is cheap, honest and needs one document. This guide covers the networks, real 2026 prices, the identity check the law requires, an eSIM plan for day one, and how to get home internet into a Frankfurt flat without signing away two years.

The four networks behind every SIM card in Frankfurt
Every deal runs on one of four physical networks, and which one matters more than the brand.
- Telekom (D1): the incumbent and still the coverage benchmark, especially on trains and outside the city.
- Vodafone (D2): a close second, and owner of the cable network that reaches many Frankfurt flats.
- O2 Telefonica: strong in dense cities and usually the cheapest of the big three.
- 1&1: genuinely new. It became Germany’s fourth network operator after moving 12.48 million customers onto its own 5G network by the end of 2025, but its own figures put household reach near 27 percent then, targeting about 35 percent by the end of 2026.
Most cheap tariffs come from resellers: ALDI TALK rides Telefonica, congstar rides Telekom’s D network.
Prepaid or contract: which SIM card in Frankfurt suits you
Your first SIM card in Frankfurt should be prepaid. It needs no German bank account, no credit check and no minimum term, so you can be connected the afternoon you land. A contract needs a German IBAN for direct debit and usually a credit check. For that IBAN fast, n26.com/en-eu is a German bank with an English app, and wise.com gives German account details without a local address.
Two legal points help. An initial contract term may run no longer than 24 months, and once it renews automatically you can cancel with one month’s notice. The paperwork is in German, so if you plan to sign, a few weeks with lingoda.com pays for itself at the first notice period clause.
What a prepaid SIM card in Frankfurt costs in 2026. Providers publish these themselves. German prepaid bills in four week cycles, so a plan charges thirteen times a year, not twelve.

Network Telefonica
Data and calls 25 GB, calls and SMS flat
Price EUR 9.99 per 4 weeks
CallYa Allnet Flat S

Two caveats. ALDI TALK adds a one off EUR 9.99 starter set including EUR 10 of credit, and it also sells 50 GB and 100 GB tiers at EUR 14.99 and EUR 19.99. And o2 publishes its four week Prepaid prices only in a downloadable price list, so check o2online.de first.
The ID rule: registering your SIM card in Frankfurt
Germany does not sell anonymous SIMs. Section 172 of the Telecommunications Act requires the provider to collect your name, date of birth, address and connection details before the line is switched on, and to verify you against a document: an ID card or passport, another valid official photo ID, a residence permit, or asylum arrival and residence certificates.
- Take your passport or national ID to a provider shop.
- Ask for a prepaid starter set and say you want it activated today.
- Hand over the document; the assistant runs the check at the till.
Ordering online means the same check by video or at a post office, which is slower and sometimes fails on non German documents. That is why buying a SIM card in Frankfurt in person is worth the walk. Your registration certificate is not on the law’s list for prepaid.

eSIM: online before you leave the terminal
There is a gap between landing at FRA and reaching a shop. A travel eSIM closes it: buy and install it before you fly, and it connects on landing. Solid options for Germany are airalo.com, saily.com and yesim.app.
The honest trade off: a travel eSIM is data only, gives no German number and costs more per gigabyte, but because it is issued abroad it sidesteps the German ID check on day one. A German issued eSIM does not. So run the travel eSIM first, then buy a real SIM card in Frankfurt for a German number. For the ride in from the airport, welcomepickups.com handles the transfer.
Home internet in Frankfurt: fibre, cable and your rights
Fixed internet needs an address, so this job waits for a lease. If you are still hunting, housinganywhere.com lets you sign from abroad.
Frankfurt is served by Telekom’s copper and fibre, by Vodafone’s cable, and increasingly by pure fibre. OXG, a Vodafone joint venture, began building here in 2026 and says it will pass around 125,800 households, with the connection into the flat free of charge even without a contract. Availability is decided building by building, so check your exact address first.

While you wait, tether a 100 GB prepaid plan to your laptop. The city also runs a free hotspot network, FrankfurtFreeWifi, at Hauptwache, Konstablerwache and Roemerberg, with no registration beyond accepting the terms. Public wifi is public, so put nordvpn.com in front of it.
Your rights when the line underperforms. German telecom law is unusually pro consumer and most arrivals never use it. Since 1 December 2021 keeping your number when you switch providers must be free. If a switch leaves you without service for more than one working day, or a technician misses an appointment, you can claim EUR 10 per working day or missed appointment, or 20 percent of the monthly fee if higher. Where delivered speed deviates significantly from the speed sold, the law lets you cut the payment or terminate early. Evidence comes from the official tool at breitbandmessung.de; the rules are at bundesnetzagentur.de.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I buy a SIM card in Frankfurt without an Anmeldung?
For prepaid, yes. The documents the law names are identity documents, not the registration certificate, so a passport or national ID normally gets you a prepaid SIM card in Frankfurt at the counter. A contract is different: expect to need a German address and bank account.
What is the cheapest SIM card in Frankfurt in 2026?
ALDI TALK Tarif S and Vodafone CallYa Allnet Flat S both give 25 GB with flat calls and SMS for EUR 9.99 per four weeks. To pay once a year, the o2 Prepaid Jahrespaket is EUR 89.99 for 150 GB and congstar’s is EUR 100 for 300 GB on Telekom.
How long does home internet in Frankfurt take to install?
No German provider publishes a binding lead time, and much depends on whether your building is already connected, so treat any date as an estimate and order the day you sign the lease. A missed appointment is worth EUR 10, or 20 percent of the monthly fee if higher.
Should I get an eSIM or a physical SIM card in Frankfurt?
Both, in that order. Install a travel eSIM before you fly so you land connected, then buy a physical SIM card in Frankfurt in your first week for a German number and far cheaper data.
Your SIM Card and Internet in Frankfurt Action Plan
Install a travel eSIM before you fly, then walk into a provider shop with your passport and buy a prepaid SIM card in Frankfurt; the check takes minutes and the first four weeks cost about EUR 10. Once you have a lease, check availability at your exact address and order the day you sign. Stay prepaid until you hold a German IBAN and are sure about a 24 month commitment, and keep the Bundesnetzagentur rules bookmarked.
